So I’ve been keeping this under wraps for the most part, but things seem a bit more solidified so I feel more comfortable letting the cat out of the bag. I got a text a little over couple of months ago from my buddy Bryan asking if I would be interested in playing keyboards for Frank Stallone. Frank had a gig opening for Eddie Money in Burbank in August, and asked if it was okay to give my number to him. Without hesitation, I said “absolutely”. It would be a great gig just for the story alone, and my insecurities told me not to get too excited because it probably wouldn’t happen anyway.
A few weeks went by and I didn’t hear anything, so I figured he must have found someone by now and didn’t think much more of it. Then one afternoon I got a call out of the blue, “Jason, this is Frank Stallone…”. Needless to say it was a bit surreal. I’ve been aware of Frank’s music since I was about 9 years old. The reason I know how to play music is directly connected to his and Bill Conti’s work on the Rocky soundtracks. In the dark ages before VCRs, DVD’s, Blu-Rays and direct streaming to the brain, movie soundtracks were the only way to keep a movie experience alive after seeing it in the theater.
In fourth grade, the music teacher Bruce DeLugo held an assembly for my whole school to demonstrate the different instruments of the orchestra in order to get kids to take lessons and join the band. I chose to play the French Horn because I knew that was the instrument I heard in Mickey’s Theme the second I heard Bruce play it. The music became more than just what I could hear and became something very real.
A funny thing happened as I started to tell a few people about the possible gig: My friends are all closet Frank Stallone fans. My good buddy Scott Beehner went crazy when I told him and mentioned that he had just made a mix CD for his car that had “Far From Over” and “Moody Girl” on it. When my girlfriend told her mom, she ran to the other room and started playing her the songs that she had in her collection.
Frank and I met a couple of days ago to go over some songs and my insecurities have now turned into sheer panic because this just got serious and I have a lot of music to learn. If you’re in town, brace yourself because it’s about to go down. The big, summer, outdoor show is August 7th, 2011 at the Starlight Bowl in Burbank. Tickets are extremely reasonable, and you can get some by clicking on the previous link.
Stallone w/ Jason Makiaris sounds like...Hollywood dream come true.
